Tanzania’s sights fit almost entirely inside the single unbroken line they call the northern circuit. Start from Arusha and take in Lake Natron, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro and you get “the safari where you search”, “the safari you bathe in” and “the wilderness with nobody in it” in one loop, without ever doubling back.

This article splits nine spots into three in the Serengeti, two at Ngorongoro, three at Lake Natron and one you sleep in, with prices, timings and where you move next. ⚠A safari is a trip that is eighty per cent preparation, and the costs come in layers — park fees, a descent fee, concession fees — so each entry says which is which. ⚠Entry and health rules change; check your own government’s current advice. Prices and rules as researched in July 2026.

Get the geography first — one unbroken loop from Arusha

The gateway is Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), and Arusha is about an hour’s drive from it. From there, north to Lake Natron, west to the Serengeti, south to Ngorongoro and back to Arusha makes a circuit that never doubles back.

Serengeti National Park — the name means “endless plain” in Maasai — is 15,000 km² of grassland, a World Heritage Site. Entry is US$70 per adult per 24 hours plus 18% VAT, about $83 — which looks steep until the moment you pass the gate and everything in your field of view becomes a documentary about the planet.

The wildebeest migration — a sight measured in density, not numbers

June and July are the months when the great migration crosses the northern and western Serengeti. The column of hundreds of thousands of animals heading north is not on a scale a single photograph holds; you drive and drive and it does not end. “The migration” is a sight you understand through density rather than numbers — and whether you chase it decides the month of the trip itself.

The big cats — your sense of distance collapses

A male lion asleep in the shade, close enough beside the vehicle to see the tip of his nose; a cheetah met in the middle of open grass, with nothing at all in between. ⚠What moves you on safari is less “I saw a rare animal” than the collapse of your sense of distance. The same species you have seen in a zoo looks like a completely different creature — and that only happens on the ground.

Hippo pools and elephants at the river — no binoculars needed

Dozens of hippos piled on top of one another, a vast yawn going up now and then. At the river, elephants come close enough that you can see a calf testing the water without binoculars. ⚠And still, binoculars and a telephoto lens belong on the packing list — spotting the distant one is the guide’s job, but confirming it is your own eyes’ (Tanzania Safari Itinerary).

Two at Ngorongoro — half a day, decided by density

The view from the rim — a walled garden of animals below the cloud

Ngorongoro, one of the largest calderas on earth and a World Heritage Site, is a “natural ark”: grassland, a lake and forest packed into a crater about 19 km across. The experience starts with the view from the rim — the moment your eyes register that everything inside the wall is the stage. ⚠The rim sits at about 2,300 m and mornings can drop to around 10°C, so bring a layer.

The crater floor — from searching to bathing

Drop about 600 m in one descent and the grammar of the safari changes. If the Serengeti is the safari where you search, this is the safari you bathe in — the density is different. With luck you meet black rhino, one of the few places on earth you can. ⚠The crater descent is $295 per vehicle, once, for half a day, and is charged separately from the entry fee (adults $70.80). ⚠Permits can only be arranged through a tour operator, so always confirm whether your package includes it.

The catch here is that costs are counted two different ways. Package prices scale roughly with the number of days, but the crater descent alone is charged per vehicleso the smaller your group, the heavier each person’s share. The standard shape is leave the rim at dawn, the crater floor through the morning, lunch at the designated picnic site, climb out in the afternoon, and ⚠watch the kites overhead while you eat (Ngorongoro Crater Safari Guide).

Three at Lake Natron — another world, with almost nobody in it

A wilderness off the north side of the major circuit. It slots into the drive to the Serengeti as a one-night stop, which makes it the place to add if you can add one day to the classic route. From Arusha it is a little under half a day by 4WD on unpaved road, and costs run about US$85–90 per person per night (roughly $35 total in village fees + $11.80 WMA entry + $17.70–23.60 a night in lodging concession + a $20 flat activity fee).

Ol Doinyo Lengai — the only volcano on earth that erupts carbonatite

A cone appearing at the end of the dry country. Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,962 m) is known as the only volcano in the world that erupts carbonatite lava, and its Maasai name means “Mountain of God”. Giraffes walking with that mountain behind them is the standard composition of the Natron shore.

The Ngare Sero waterfall hike — river crossings, with a Maasai guide

The centrepiece of a stay here is the waterfall hike up the Ngare Sero gorge (1.5–2 hours round trip). A sudden volume of water appears in a crack in the dry country.A guide from the local Maasai community is required, and the cost is included in the $20 flat activity feethe route is a chain of river crossings you would never find alone, so this is not only a rule but a practical necessity. ⚠You cross the water repeatedly, so sandals are recommended; bring a swimsuit too.

Flamingos and the lake at dusk — a sanctuary made by caustic water

Lake Natron is hot and intensely alkalinean environment too harsh for most life, which is exactly what built the world’s largest breeding ground for lesser flamingos, one no predator can reach. The paradox that it is protected because it is unliveable is the lake’s ecosystem in a sentence. At night there is no signal and no street lighting, and the stars are correspondingly thick (Lake Natron Travel Guide).

One you sleep in — a night in a tented camp

Tented camps — wilderness on the other side of one layer of canvas

The standard lodging on the northern circuit is a tented camp out in the grassland. Through a single layer of canvas you sense the animals moving — and inside there is a four-poster bed. Think of it not as survival but as a hotel in the shape of a camp and your expectations land correctly. After lights out, the Milky Way stands directly over the camp“pouring down” is the accurate description of a southern-hemisphere sky. ⚠Staying inside the parks carries a concession fee (US$71 per adult per night) on top of entry, though packages normally include it.

By number of days — how far these nine spots go

  • 3–4 days — the two classics only: the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The contrast between searching and bathing works with just those two
  • 6 days — all nine spots: put Lake Natron on the first day and you get Arusha → Lake Natron → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha as one unbroken line. A total of $2,000–4,000 per person is the realistic band (Tanzania Safari Itinerary)
  • Choosing by season — June or July: the wildebeest migration and Lake Natron’s best months (the June–October dry season) overlap. The routing joins up naturally in those months too

Three things to settle before you go

  • Understand the layers of the costa package at US$300–650 per person per day (park fees, lodging, 4WD, guide and meals) plus guide tips of $20–25 a day is the base. ⚠On top of that sit per-vehicle items like the crater descent ($295). On any quote, always establish what is included and what is not
  • Visa and vaccinations, early — ⚠every traveller needs the eVisa (US$50, online only), and processing delays are common, so apply at least two weeks before departure. ⚠Transiting a yellow-fever-risk country such as Kenya for over 12 hours also requires the yellow fever certificate. Malaria is a year-round risk — long sleeves at night, repellent, and talk to a doctor about prophylaxis
  • Pack for distance, dust and temperature swingbinoculars, a telephoto camera, dust protection (buff, sunglasses) and a warm layer. Bring US dollars in new notes. The etiquette is animals first, stay in the vehicle, no feeding and no shouting

Prices and rules change. Entry and descent fees are revised from time to time, so confirm current figures on your operator’s quote. Health and entry are matters of personal safety — check your own government’s current advice. The country as a whole is laid out in the Tanzania Travel Guide.
