How many days? Choose by travel style
- Around 5 days — Marrakesh + the Sahara: base yourself in Marrakesh and take a 2-night, 3-day desert tour. The fastest route to the heart of Morocco
- Around 7 days — add the Atlantic wind: add an Essaouira day trip to the above and taste the contrast between the interior and the coast
- 10 days or more — a two-continent loop: combine it with Spain and Portugal, one to two hours away by air, and fold Africa and Europe into a single trip
Essential prep before you go
Tourist stays of up to 90 days are visa-free for many nationalities, Japan included (at least three months of remaining passport validity is recommended — check the rules for your own passport). The entry number written into your passport on arrival is asked for at every hotel check-in, so photograph that page. The dirham (DH) is a closed currency that can’t legally be taken out of the country, so the basic rule is to exchange locally and spend it all before you go. Best time to go and typical budget
The best seasons are spring (Mar–May) and fall (Oct–Nov). In summer the interior (Marrakesh and the desert routes) turns brutally hot at over 40°C, while winter desert nights drop to near 0°C. The desert tour (2 nights, 3 days) anchors the budget: shared tours from €95, standard €150–300, private from €375 are the going rates (as of July 2026). Prices overall run a notch below Western Europe, and eating at street stalls and local canteens keeps food costs well down.
Pairing Morocco with the Iberian Peninsula
Portugal and Spain — the countries this site has covered most deeply — are just one to two hours away by air, and low-cost fares can drop to only a few thousand yen one way (our benchmark in Japanese yen). Historically, too, the two shores are bound into a single story: the wellspring of Islamic ornament and the lands on either side of it. For travelers coming from far away — there are no direct flights from Japan, for instance — that is all the more reason to design Morocco as a two-continent journey with Europe, which is what Travelers Route recommends.
