Hong Kong and Macau are that rare pairing that lets you taste two urban civilizations in a single trip. How many days: choose by travel style

• 2 days — Hong Kong distilled: the do-it-in-one-evening night route of Star Ferry → A Symphony of Lights → Peak Tram and a dim sum and cha chaan teng food crawl
• 3 days — the classic two-city loop: two days in Hong Kong plus a Macau day trip. The model we actually ran
• 4 days — overnight in Macau for Cotai after dark: linger over the Venetian’s gondolas and the illuminations. Weekday rates at the resort hotels can be surprisingly reasonable

Essential prep before you go

Short tourist visits are visa-free for many nationalities in both Hong Kong and Macau — check the rules for your passport. Three things matter: 1) crossing between Hong Kong and Macau means immigration checks, so carry your passport (ferry about 1 hour, HK$160–200 as a guide, or the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge bus at HK$65). 2) Consolidate your money in Hong Kong dollars (accepted at near parity in Macau). 3) On arrival, get an Octopus card first — one card handles the MTR, buses, ferries and even convenience stores (as of July 2026).

Dig deeper by theme

• Night views — the golden route of the Star Ferry (from HK$5), A Symphony of Lights (nightly at 8 pm, free) and the Peak Tram (HK$116 round trip)
• Food — wonton noodles, dim sum, cha chaan tengs and the Lei Yue Mun seafood village. The afternoon-tea window from 2:30 to 6:30 pm is the best-value slot of the day
• World Heritage — the Historic Centre of Macau (inscribed in 2005; 22 buildings and 8 squares). Walkable from Senado Square, and most of it is free
• Resort nights — the Venetian on Cotai (gondola rides from 158 MOP) and the Parisian’s Eiffel Tower, linked by free shuttle buses

Best season and budget

The best season is October to December — high odds of clear skies, falling humidity, and comfortable conditions for night views and food crawls alike (in late November we were fine in a T-shirt with a light jacket). Summer is muggy and overlaps with typhoon season, so it is safer to avoid. On budget: eat mainly at local places and food is astonishingly cheap (wonton noodles HK$46, dim sum from HK$30 a plate), while hotels sit at the expensive end for Asia. An ordinary hotel, with the budget poured into food and night views — that is the right allocation for Hong Kong and Macau.
