London is a city you could never finish in weeks — which, put the other way round, means two nights are enough to get its measure. And an hour south by direct train at best there is a seaside town with white chalk cliffs, Premier League football and a Sunday roast. City and countryside, out and back inside a weekend: that is the scale of this country.

Get the geography first — one line running south from London
London to Brighton is an hour at best on a direct train, roughly every 15 minutes (from Victoria, London Bridge and others). From Brighton it is about another hour east by bus to the Seven Sisters. City, seaside, cliffs and stadium all sit on that one southbound line — which is why a two-night weekend works.
Two in London — a free museum, and the Thames at night
The British Museum — the originals of world history, for nothing
Entry is free, and the actual Rosetta Stone — the key that unlocked hieroglyphs — is one pane of glass away. An overnight flight landing early in the morning buys you a full first day. ⚠Trying to see it all will consume the whole day, so narrowing to three rooms you want is the form for a two-night trip — precisely because it is free, you can decide to come back another time. ⚠The permanent collection is free, but a free timed-entry slot from the official site smooths the way in (there is a security check).
The Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures, the Egyptian mummies — the “originals” behind every world-history textbook, in one building. This is also a structural advantage of travelling in Britain: the major museums, the National Gallery among them, are free to enter (special exhibitions excepted), so the budget can move from admissions to transport and food. ⚠Charging overseas visitors has been reported as under discussion, so check the current position before you fly.
The south bank of the Thames at night — one hour before bed
Back in London in the evening, give the Thames an hour before bed. The floodlit Palace of Westminster and Big Ben seen from the south bank, with a red double-decker crossing the bridge in front of them — the most London photograph there is, completed here. ⚠On the Tube and the buses alike, a contactless credit card gets you straight on, and the daily cap (£8.90 for Zones 1–2, or £5.25 for buses only) stops the charging automatically (fares are held at these levels through the end of 2026).
Five in southern England — cliffs, hills, a stadium and a table
Brighton — a seaside resort an hour from London at best
An hour at best on a direct train, roughly every 15 minutes — that distance is the whole of this town. It is the launch point for the cliffs and the launch point for the stadium, and one night here collects both “the cliffs in the evening” and “the Sunday match”, neither of which a day trip reaches. The Palace Pier and the pebble beach are the everyday scenery.
The Seven Sisters — seven white cliffs in a row
Green hills stop dead and a wall of white chalk drops into the English Channel. Off the bus at Seven Sisters Park Centre, follow the Cuckmere river down the valley toward the sea — about 30 minutes on the flat, and the moment you step onto the pebble beach, seven white waveforms appear together on your right. Both cliffs and beach are free. The chalk is still retreating tens of centimetres a year, and that living whiteness is why it is called whiter than Dover.
⚠The bus is the 12X Coaster and nothing else — about an hour from Stop D outside Brighton station. The similarly numbered 12A stops everywhere and takes over 1.5 hours. ⚠The evening light is in a class of its own — when the low sun turns the chalk gold, the daytime “white cliffs” become a completely different landscape (sunset in May comes around 20:30). ⚠There is no railing at the edge and the ground does collapse: stay several metres back, without exception, and the beach narrows at high tide, so keep the tide in mind (Seven Sisters Day Trip).
The sheep hills of the South Downs — the bus window is already the show
The view from the bus to the cliffs is itself a sight. ⚠Get the front seats on the top deck of the double-decker and the ride threading through the sheep hills of the South Downs National Park is already the start of the highlight reel. An hour you had written off as “travel time” turns into sightseeing — which is why choosing the 12X over the all-stops 12A is not only about the clock.
The Amex Stadium — a different sport from the television
Two hours before kickoff the road to the ground is already a tide of club colours — a Premier League match is not “90 minutes of football” but a day-long festival. One stop from Brighton’s central station on the dedicated shuttle train, and stepping off at Falmer drops you straight into the crowd. What surprises you first in your seat is how close the pitch is and how the grass reads, and then 90 minutes in which the singing behind the goal never stops.
The ground opens early, so have a pie and an ale in the concourse — the classic British matchday meal — before going in. At the kickoff whistle the whole stand starts to roll with chants, and you discover that the Premier League is a sport you watch with your ears. ⚠Tickets are named and identity may be checked at entry. The order is club official (membership required) → the official ticket exchange → an authorised agent, and that order is the rule; ⚠resale sites carry a real risk of refused entry and cost several times as much. The Sunday roast — a table that counts as sightseeing
Sunday in Brighton hands you two pieces of British weekend culture at once: the Sunday roast and the Premier League. Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding under a flood of gravy, a set meal served only on Sundays, with the pubs filling up with families. Sitting down to eat properly at midday and going to the football after is the order the place itself keeps. ⚠Put the first night in Brighton and the cliffs at dusk join smoothly to the next day’s match. With only two nights in London, staying within walking distance of a major station (around Victoria or King’s Cross) is the most efficient choice — London is expensive even by Western European standards, and spending on location rather than room size pays back better. ⚠The weather does “four seasons in a day” as a matter of routine, so carry a waterproof layer year round (May mornings and evenings drop to around 10°C).
By number of days — how far these seven spots go
- 1 day — London only: the British Museum in the morning, the south bank at night. Even a single connecting day touches the skeleton
- A two-night weekend — all seven: British Museum on the first morning → Brighton in the afternoon → the cliffs at dusk. Day two: Sunday roast → the match → back to London at night for the Thames. That fills the weekend

Three things to settle before you go

- Work the cliffs back from “arrive in the evening” — the 12X Coaster takes about an hour, plus about 30 minutes on foot from the bus stop to the cliffs. To be standing on the beach when the sun turns the chalk gold, you have to count backwards and leave in the afternoon. Solid shoes, a windproof layer and water (even in summer, the evening is cold)
- Fixture first, flights second — kickoff times move at short notice for broadcast. ⚠Don’t stack anything else onto a matchday; treat the travel itself as part of the experience and you will enjoy it more
