Mekong Delta Tour Guide — Sampans, Islands and Fireflies

About two hours by car from the roar of Ho Chi Minh City, you enter the world of the hand-rowed boat: narrow channels where nipa palms lean over the water, and a rower in a conical non la hat sculling you through. A day tour of the Mekong Delta (the My Tho area) is the classic way to add “great-river time” to a Ho Chi Minh City stay. The highlight — a rowing boat through the nipa-palm channels

The star of the tour is the hand-rowed sampan, everyone aboard wearing a non la. For 10–15 minutes you glide down a channel a few meters wide, roofed over by nipa palms, with nothing but the sound of the oars — and the mud-brown water is not dirt but the color of the Mekong’s nutrients, the same water that feeds Vietnam’s greatest rice bowl. The moment a passing boat’s conical hats glow in the light filtering through the palms, you are looking at the Mekong Delta’s postcard made real.

Island-hopping the sandbars — fruit, coconut candy and honey tea

On the islands scattered across the main stream, the visits run in sequence: tropical fruit tasting in an orchard (dragon fruit, pineapple, longan — rotating with the season), a look inside a coconut-candy workshop, and honey tea at a bee farm. You move by horse cart or on foot, with folk instruments playing here and there. Yes, it is countryside arranged for visitors — but watching coconut go from the press to finished candy in front of you is genuinely fun, and as tasting-to-shopping arrangements go, it is an honest one. Lunch (or dinner) is the local specialty, whole fried elephant ear fish — far milder than its looks suggest, the white flesh wrapped in rice paper at the table.

Sunset on the main stream, then the firefly trees

The privilege of the afternoon departure is this sunset cruise on the main stream. The sun drops beyond a river wide enough to be mistaken for the sea, and the palm forest on the far bank turns to silhouette — an hour the daytime tours never see. Then, after dark, you watch fireflies gathering in the waterside trees from the boat. The lights blink like strings of Christmas bulbs and barely register on camera, so put it down and use your eyes. And the Mekong’s fireflies fly all year round, whatever the season — a happy surprise if you think of fireflies as a brief seasonal event (as of July 2026).

Practical notes for the Mekong tour

• Time and route — Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho is about 2 hours each way by road. Day tours return by evening; firefly night tours leave after midday and return around 9 pm
• Choosing — the content barely differs between companies, so compare on the guide language offered, the pickup area and whether the meal (elephant ear fish) is included. If you want the evening too, the firefly tour is the only choice
• Timing caution — some companies add a 20–50% surcharge over Tet (Lunar New Year); in the rainy season (May–October), come prepared for squalls
• What to bring — sunscreen, hat, insect repellent, and small Vietnamese dong notes (for island tips and souvenirs). Around 20,000 VND for the sampan rower keeps things smooth
• Pairings — back in the city, add the water puppet theater or a Saigon River dinner cruise and the “Ho Chi Minh City evening” becomes a full course
