Greece’s sights are scattered across the mainland and the islands, but look at just two Aegean islands and the white towns, the caldera views and a 3,600-year-old city all come as one piece. Mykonos and Santorini are about 2–2.5 hours apart by fast ferry, and joining them in that order — the lively island first, the closing view last — builds a trip of seven to nine days.
This article covers eleven spots across those two islands, split into six on Santorini and five on Mykonos, with prices, timings and where to go next (the Acropolis in Athens is not included). Prices and rules as researched in July 2026.
Get the geography first — Mykonos north, Santorini south
Both islands are in the Cyclades, with Mykonos to the north and Santorini to the south. Fly in from Athens, cross by fast ferry, fly out at the end is the golden route. Take the islands in the order “lively first, closing view last” — putting the Oia sunset at the end of the trip maximises what you take home.
Six on Santorini — the caldera rim, and the ruins at the southern end
Santorini is an island whose towns are stacked along the rim of a caldera left by a collapsed crater. Oia sits at the northern tip and Fira in the middle, both on the caldera side, and only the Akrotiri site is at the opposite southern end. Once that layout is clear, planning a day here gets much easier.
Oia — blue domes, and an empty town before 8 am
Walking it is simple: follow the main street along the caldera and duck into the lanes. Blue domes against a pink bell tower is the town’s signature. ⚠The hours to walk are before 8 am, when the town is empty, and the hour before sunset — rather than the violent glare of midday. In that last hour the whole town turns gold and the sun drops into the caldera. Being here for either of those windows is the privilege of people who stayed the night.
Ammoudi Bay — black rock at the bottom of nearly 300 steps
If your legs are willing, take the nearly 300 steps down from the edge of Oia to Ammoudi Bay. The contrast of black lava rock against clear water is a completely different thing from the postcard you were looking down on from the cliff. ⚠The descent is easy; the climb back is a war of attrition — in high summer, go after the sun drops, or save it for a day with slack in it.
Fira — the bus hub, and the most usable town on the island
The town at the centre of the caldera. It is the bus hub, so everywhere is a direct ride, and it has the island’s widest choice of restaurants and shops. If Oia is the town for looking, Fira is the town for moving. The cable car and the 600 steps — two ways down to the Old Port
Between Fira and the Old Port below the caldera runs a cable car (around €6 one way, about 5 minutes). ⚠When cruise ships are in, waits can hit an hour. Rather than queue, you can walk the zigzag of roughly 600 steps instead — though the climb back up in summer is a war of attrition. Worth noting: the donkey rides on those steps have drawn growing animal-welfare criticism in recent years.
Akrotiri — a city under a roof, 1,500 years older than Pompeii
At the southern end of the island, a town buried whole by the eruption about 3,600 years ago is preserved beneath a roof. It is a Minoan city more than 1,500 years older than Pompeii, and you walk past three-storey buildings and BC-era drainage still in place (entry around €20, about an hour on site).
⚠The hidden value of this site is that it has a roof. Midsummer on Santorini is violently bright, and neither Oia nor Fira has much shade. So give it the 11:30–12:30 slot — the worst possible hour to be outside. On this island, “a sight that does not need the cool hours” is a strategic asset (Akrotiri Ruins Guide).
Museum of Prehistoric Thera — the frescoes are here, not at the site
⚠Go without knowing this and you will certainly miss it. The Spring Fresco, the blue monkeys, the procession of ships — the wall paintings that carry the Minoan eye have been moved from the site and are displayed at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira (entry around €10). Treat the site and the museum as two halves of one experience: the skeleton of the buildings there, the paintings here.
Five on Mykonos — a white labyrinth, the wind, and a sacred island
It gets introduced as a party island, but walking it changes the impression. The sights fall into two zones — the white town of Chora (Mykonos Town) and the row of beaches on the south coast — and two nights with a rental car gets you the island’s skeleton.
The Kato Mili windmills — stand here and you understand why
On a bluff jutting into the sea at the southern end of Mykonos Town stand the windmills that once ground wheat, the island’s symbol. They make the postcard — but what standing there teaches you is why windmills are here at all: in summer the Aegean runs a hard north wind called the meltemi, and even in July the water below breaks white. The mills were not decoration; they were machinery for using that wind.
Little Venice — the good seats go an hour before sunset
Just north of the windmills, where the buildings press right out over the waterline. A relic of 18th-century merchants’ mansions, it is now a run of sea-facing bars — a place built for having a drink with the sun dropping into the sea in front of you. ⚠The good seats start going an hour before sunset. It is refreshingly simple: the most crowded hour is also the most beautiful one.
Mykonos Town — a white labyrinth you walk to get lost in
The old town of tangled whitewashed lanes is best walked with no destination at all. The maze is said to have been built narrow to confuse pirates; today that is precisely the pleasure of it. The windmills and Little Venice are at the town’s southern end, so drifting south while lost brings you out at sunset time anyway.
Ano Mera — the other Mykonos, 15 minutes inland
Inland, about 15 minutes by car from Mykonos Town. Taverna terraces ring the square, and time moves at a different rate from the town. It is where you see that a tourist island also has a lived-in side, and the kind of place a rental car is what gets you to. Delos — a day trip to an island that is all ruins
About 30 minutes by boat from Mykonos Town, around €25 return plus site admission. The whole World Heritage island is an archaeological site, with the remains of the Temple of Apollo and the row of lions. By number of days — how far these eleven spots go
- 2 nights — Mykonos only: a town-and-beach island, so two nights gets you its skeleton. The windmills, Little Venice and the white labyrinth, plus Ano Mera and the beaches by rental car
- 5–6 nights — both islands: two nights on Mykonos, three or four on Santorini is our conclusion from doing it. Santorini is an island to live on for a few days along the caldera rim, with sunsets, ruins, wineries and island driving to draw on (Aegean Island Hopping)
- 7–9 days — in via Athens, out by air: Athens in → Mykonos → Santorini → fly out is the golden route. You can also skip the return to Athens and carry straight on to the next country (Greece & Italy Itinerary)
Three things to settle before you go
- The order of the islands — lively first, closing view last. Put the Oia sunset at the end of the trip and you maximise what you take home; reverse the order and the back half sags
- Budget for paper tickets and delays on the ferry — the crossing is about 2–2.5 hours by fast ferry, tickets are essentially paper and online check-in opens 48 hours before departure, and you want to be at the port 30–45 minutes early. ⚠The meltemi causes delays and cancellations, so never put a long crossing the day before your flight home
- Assign places to times of day — towns in the morning and evening, ruins in the middle of the day. Oia before 8 am and in the hour before sunset; Akrotiri, which has a roof, in the glare. That allocation alone transforms a midsummer day
