Greek Island Hopping — Ferries, Route Order and Nights per Island

The heart of an Aegean trip isn’t choosing an island — it’s connecting them. The classic run enters through Athens, works south from Mykonos to Santorini, and finally exits by air to the next destination. Here is the whole practical side of island hopping, from booking the ferries to how boarding day actually unfolds.

The short version — the golden pattern of island hopping

1. Athens in → Mykonos (2 nights) → Santorini (3–4 nights) → fly out is the golden route for a 7–9 day trip
2. Order the islands from the lively one to the closing spectacle. Put Oia’s sunset at the very end and satisfaction peaks where it should
3. Between islands it’s a fast ferry (SeaJets and others), about 2–2.5 hours. Wind delays are frequent — never book anything important for the evening you arrive

Athens to the first island — fly or sail?

(All as of July 2026.) Ferries run on seasonal timetables — summer brings more sailings, but prices swing widely with how early you book. If your international flight lands after midday, it’s safer to sleep in Athens and take a morning boat the next day. We ourselves skipped Athens entirely and flew straight into Mykonos on an international routing via the Middle East — in summer, direct flights to the islands multiply from cities across Europe and the Middle East, so a no-Athens design is worth considering too.

Island-to-island ferries in practice — riding SeaJets

Mykonos → Santorini is about 2–2.5 hours on a SeaJets fast ferry (from around €74; as of July 2026). Booking about six weeks out, we paid €178 for two, on the 9:50 departure arriving 11:45. Here is what actually riding it taught us:

• Tickets are basically paper-based — online check-in opens 48 hours before departure, and we still had to print the boarding passes or have them issued at an affiliated ticket office. Don’t assume a phone screen will get you aboard (confirm the ticketing method when you book)
• Don’t mix up the ports — Mykonos has an old port and a new port, and the big ferries generally use the new port. Leave real margin for the trip from your hotel
• Boarding is over in a blink — stops are short for the size of the ship, and everyone pours in through the vehicle deck at once. Be at the port 30–45 minutes before departure
• Comfortable inside — but you and your bags separate — suitcases go on the racks near the boarding door, and you take only valuables up to the cabin
• Delays are routine — the meltemi, the strong summer north wind of the Aegean, delays and cancels fast ferries. Keep arrival-evening plans free of dinner bookings and transfers

If you’ve rented a car, work backwards from the return time. We checked out at 9:00, returned the car near the new port at 9:30 and walked to the quay — exactly the right margin. On the Santorini side, the single road climbing from the port up the caldera cliff jams, so check your hotel transfer or the bus times in advance and the arrival stays smooth.

How many nights on each island

Having ridden the route, our conclusion is “Mykonos 2 nights, Santorini 3–4.” Mykonos is a town-and-beaches island, and two nights gets you its skeleton; Santorini is an island for living slowly on the caldera rim, with sunsets, ruins, wineries and a whole island to roam — far more layers to explore. Weight the trip toward the back half and satisfaction climbs. All told, seven days including travel days is the floor; nine is comfortable.

The exit strategy — skip Athens and leave for the next country

The finishing touch on an island-hopping trip is the exit. Both Santorini and Mykonos have airports, and the summer schedules fly direct to many major European cities — which means there is no need to return to Athens. We flew out of Santorini to Italy and carried the trip on in Venice: from the white islands of the Aegean to the floating city, a change of scenery only a European multi-country trip can deliver. If your flight home does leave from Athens, build in slack — be back in Athens by the evening before, and ferry delays lose their power to hurt you.

Island-hopping practical notes

• Booking order — July and August ferries and hotels are first come, first served. Once dates are fixed: ferry first, then hotels
• Suitcases — island towns are cobbles, hills and stairs. Being carryable beats having wheels; soft-sided or small wins
• Seasickness — fast ferries roll on windy days. If in doubt, take a tablet and sit centrally rather than forward
• Cash — cards work almost everywhere, but keep small notes for tiny tavernas and kiosks

How to spend the island days — what to decide after the ferries

Once the ferries are settled, the next question is how you move once you are on the island. Leave this undecided and the stay you paid for goes on waiting around.

• On Santorini, hire a car for one day: buses work, but hiring a car (or an ATV) for a single day changes the freedom entirely. You reach not only the caldera-rim towns but the interior and the ruins in the south on the same day
• Walk the towns morning and evening: in Oia, the empty streets before 8 a.m. and the hour before sunset are the times to walk; the blazing middle of the day is not. Give the middle of the day to somewhere with a roof, or to the sea — that is also the right answer physically
• The area changes the character of the stay: Oia for the sunset and the quiet, Fira for the balance of convenience and price. Whether the “caldera view” is from your room or from a shared terrace must be checked before booking (%s)
• Choose free cancellation: in the Aegean, ferries are delayed and cancelled. For the island end of the booking, put “survives a change” ahead of “locked in early”
